Shell Stitch Beanie Help

I have had more than a few emails and comments regarding my free Shell Stitch Beanie pattern. People tend to struggle with the same row, therefore I assume that I wrote it confusing and it needs a bit of clarification, so this post is dedicated to answering the question about the pattern row on this hat.

Sometimes I feel I should have named this hat the Double V-Stitch Beanie.  The pattern itself looks like a V with each side doubled.  So, once you end the rounds of single crochets you begin the row of the pattern stitch.  This means chaining 3 (this is the first dc) and then making a dc into the same stitch.  This forms the first side of your "V."  You then ch1.  This is the space between the sides of the V.  Then to make the other side you make two more dcs.  You will then skip the designated spaces and then make another double V. (2dc, ch1, 2dc).

Okay, once done with the first pattern row you will slip stitch into the top of the first dc made.  You will then slip stitch into the ch1-space.  This will mean you begin to make your next V into the middle of the V of the previous row.  You will then chain 3 (this is the first dc) and then make a dc into the same stitch. This forms the first side of your "V." You then ch1. This is the space between the sides of the V. Then to make the other side you make two more dcs. You will then skip to the middle of the next V and (2dc, ch1, 2dc).

In the end the pattern looks like this:

Each line represents one dc.  Each double crochet is made into the space of the previous V.  Hopefully this helps with some of the confusion!

  3. Hi,
I just made this last night in the 6-12 mo. size--everything looked good, but it was huge!! It fit me! I'm not sure if I just crochet loose, but I followed the pattern and used a stitch marker. Any sugegstions? I used cotton yarn-sugar and cream. I read a comment that someone used a size G hook and had good luck with the sizing, so maybe I will try that. Thanks for the pattern, though--it looked really cute, just a little big for my 18 month old!

  6. Hi. I have the exact scenario as Laura. I've also restarted about 4x so far and I am getting the "V" pattern, but the edges are getting ruffled/wavy once I start row 10/11.....it does not look like a hat at all. I love this pattern but I can't seem to get it right. Do you have any suggestions as to what I could have done wrong??? I would LOVE any help....PLEASE! Please email me at amauro@telus.net. Thanks. Alaina

  8. I am just starting out and teaching myself how to crochet. Is there any way you could add pictures maybe to clarify rounds 9 and 10? I love this hat and really want to accomplish it! Thanks!

  9. Thanks for sharing this pattern! It's lovely.

I am very new to crocheting and I had to start over several times. What kept getting me off track was Round 9 as well. What I was doing was crocheting into the ch 1 stitch but also crocheting into the space left from the 3 skipped stitches from Round 8. When I did it, it made it ruffled and not really a hat.
Once I figured out my mistake and only crocheted into the ch 1 stitches, it flowed just right.
I don't know if that will help anyone; I hope that it does.

    Again, thanks for this pattern.

  11. I'm having the same problems as others seems to be having. I've tried 5 different times but mine is getting ruffly as well. If anyone has pics of rounds 9 &10 that would be great! I can't seem to see where I'm messing up! :/
Lisa- Thanks for the advice I'm going to see if that's what's messing me up! :)

  12. Seems like a lot of people here aer having the same troubles. That's worrisome. I'm right in the middle of mine - round 9 - and was wondering why mine wasn't quite lookin right. Still looks cute - but nothing like the picture. I'm a seasoned crocheter, but I'm still getting a result that doesn't come close to resembling the image that accompanyies this pattern...

    1. I think you can check on this website to figure out the problem with shell stitches. Well, I struggled too with round 9 at the beginning and then I was reminded by the previous jar cover I made last time. And I think I'm finding out the way to make it right :P

  16. I've made this hat once for a friend and it does look slightly ruffly once you get to row 9/10. However, if you keep going throughout the entire pattern and finish it off, it looks MUCH more like a hat. Also, once you put it on a child's head it fits like it is supposed to...no ruffles! You just have to finish it. Blocking after you are done might help as well. It's super cute when you are done!

  17. Rnd 8: ch3 (this counts as first dc), dc in same stitch, ch 1, 2dc in same stitch, *skip 3 sc, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next sc* repeat from * to beginning chain. Join. (for extra help click here).

should this not say skip last three single crochets before joining to beginning chain

  21. Hi, started to make this hat for my kiddo using the size 3 to 10. Not sure what happened but its pretty big. Perhaps my hook size. Its too big even for me. The pattern is great and uniformed but just too big. I will try it again.

  22. Mine started to ruffle before continuing on to the next several rows of V stitch...it eventually tapers. Don't give up. Also, I didn't join any of my sc rows, just counted the number of stitches until I got to the appropriate number. Not sure if that was right or not. :P

  29. I, too, found this pattern to be confusing and ended up with a hat that was HUGE. I took it all out and am starting again with a G hook, like PP said. Hopefully that fixes my issue. The hat looks gorgeous in the pictures and I would love to make one.

  31. I have been crocheting for years now and I too wonder as some where do you do your ch3 etc to do the first shell especially since it doesn't have ends ie a sl st to end one round to start another. Logically going in rounds it would be in the first st (ie sc) of the row but ch3 would start at last sc of previous round (I Think). Whether you call the sts shells or dbl Vs or split shell doesn't make it hard but the ending of round 8 I think AnonymousMarch 1, 2012 at 11:42 AM said is hard to fathom unless you explain it better or say to end row with sl st or state ch3 and the rest of the shell is crochet in first stitch of the next round. Please advise as I have a baby not far away
